Sedation is a procedure that uses sedatives to establish a calm and relaxed state. The practice has been popular because it benefits both the patient and the dentist.
Two types of Sedation Dentistry we offer at Roman Shlafer, DDS:
ORAL SEDATION
Oral sedation dentistry is the common technique that makes use of oral sedatives to settle patient’s fears. The procedure relieves anxiety without the use of needles or intravenous tubes. Medications allow you to have a comfortable experience as if you are sleeping, but in reality, it maintains your level of consciousness for safety and cooperation.
An hour before the appointment, you will take a small pill that will make you drowsy. The medication will help reduce the memory of the dental office to avoid the recall of trauma. Once you are already relaxed and comfortable, our dentist will proceed with the dental procedures. Our dental team will regularly monitor your vital signs during the procedure to ensure your safety. After all the treatment is complete, you will be escorted by your companion to your home to rest and sleep. The sedative effect allows more dental procedures to be performed in less time and with fewer appointments.
CONSCIOUS SEDATION
Conscious sedation is a technique for effective management of moderate to severe dental anxieties and pain during the dental or surgical procedures. It provides a type relaxation that allows patients to undergo procedures that they cannot face due to extreme fear.
Monitoring devices will be used to monitor your heart rate, blood oxygen levels, blood pressure and breathing while the procedure is ongoing. You will be awake through the entire process but the sedatives in effect, you will not be able to remember the procedure you have undertaken.
The levels of sedation include:
- Minimal sedation-you are relaxed but awake
- Moderate sedation-you may tend to mumble the words you speak and may not remember much of the procedure.
- Deep sedation-you are awake but at the edge of consciousness
- General anaesthetic-completely unconscious
